Our narrator, Derfel, is a Saxon orphan who was adopted by Merlin, a one of Arthur's confidantes and chief fighters. The story opens when Derfel is in his old age; he has become a monk, and is engaged in writing down Arthur's story. He tells it to his queen, Igraine, and their conversations interject the main narrative of Arthur's rise to power.
