What Is A.I.S.I. 440-C?

440-C, which consists of carbon atoms and other important elements, is the miraculous steel of high technology. It gives perfect results especially in the production of hunting knives.

The quality of the steel can be understood by the comparison of its mechanical properties which are tensile strength (19685 kg/cm2), yield strength (18965 kg/cm2), shear strength (%3 in 5 cm.), contraction, impact resistance (2.8 cm2gm) and hardness (in units of Rockwell). The existance and amount of Molibdenium and Vanadium give rise the material to become a first class material. Molibdenium secures a homogenous hardness from the surface to the center of the steel. In addition to this, it makes the steel to be able to resist corrosion, higher tensile and compressive stresses, higher temperatures, while making the steel harder. On the other hand, Vanadium increases the tensile strength since it accelerates the formation of carbide.

The preference of the above composition by both consumers and manufacturers has made 440-C popular all over the world. 440-C composition, which is also used by Av-Kamp, is accepted as a norm by A.I.S.I (American Iron and Steel Industries). Moreover, TSEK (The Institute of Turkish Standards) determining the Turkish Standards, adopted this composition as a standart according to the studies resulted on 22.01.1992 and 25.03.1992 for hunting and survival knives, respectively. Rockwell hardness test is the most frequently used way to determine the degree of hardness of steels. It is one of the most important questions to ask whether the steel is isotopic or not, meaning a homogenous hardness. A desirable degree of hardness is 58 RHC. Rockwell hardness test is being used by those firms whose objectives are durability and perfection. Under the international consensus, this test is symbolized by the red sticker on the surface of knives.
