Philosophy is once again beginning to question its goals and asumptions. This malaise is signified by the growing opposition between objectivism and relativism, between rationality and irrationality, and between realism and anti-realim. Contemporary thinking is becoming increasingly polarised and attempts to escape from this entire framework of analysis have all too frequently been assimilated to these standard oppositions.
This major new book represents a courageous attempt to break out of this mould, while identifying what is wrong with the intellectual and cultural matrix that has shaped so much of modern life. Professor Bernstein draws freely and expertly on recent developments in both continental and analytical traditions as well as in the philosphy of the natural and social sciences. He seeks to integrate recent discussions of science, hermeneutics and praxis. He observes that a new understanding about the nature of human rationality is at root of the current concern. He examines a number of new debates and controversies, relating them to each other in a novel and illuminating way. His thesis is that what is now ocurring is a movement beyond objectivism and relativism, showing the way forward to a new philosphy based on practical reasoning.
Richard J. Bernstein is Professor of Philosophy at Haveford College, Pennsylvania, and co-editor of the journal Praxis International.
* Book is in good condition. Very minor tear at bottom of spine. Pages are slightly yellowed. On very few pages there are small pen drawn lines in the margin where important passages were marked. About 3 pages dog-eared. Overall book is in very good condition.
A great book for anyone interested in philosophy.
