Hardcover first published 1949 by G.R. Gawthorn, Ltd., in a worn jacket, otherwise whole, and protected in cellophane. Publisher's compliment slip to Prof. C. van Riet Lowe, University of the Witwatersrand, on inside front pastedown. Attached to the opposite endpaper is a three-quarter rear view pen drawing of an aurochs by Henri Breuil, attached at the corners with tape, and an inscription in French, signed by Henri Breuil. The reverse of this page has a further original illustration by Henri Breuil, this time in colour pencil, and also taped in at the corners. This is headed "A mon ami le Prof. C. van Riet Lowe", and depicts prehistoric people around a fire, surrounded by carnivores and herbivores of the age. A further pen inscription along the bottom edge is dated 21 (?) IV 1949, and is also signed by Henri Breuil. The half-title page opposite contains a further dedication by the author, to his friend C. van Riet Lowe, signed and dated Johannesburg 14.IV.1949. 100 pages including index and glossary, as well as many colour reproduction drawings by the author, in the same style as the original referred to above.
