The author of this children's story travelled to Mongolia three times with expeditions to set up meteorological stations. The leader of the first trip was Franz August Larson, who accompanied president Hoover on his Mongolian travels. In the course of his expeditions,  Mühlenweg himself was kidnapped by robbers, from whom he escaped, fleeing 160 miles on foot through the desert, finally being rescued by Mongolian cavalry. He draws on these experiences in telling the story of Big Tiger, a Chinese boy, and Christian, a European boy brought up in China. The Times Literary Supplement called it "one of those books which appear very rarely, and are treasured by generations, read by the full grown and read to the young", and expressed the hope it would soon appear in an English translation in England. The introduction is by Peter Fleming, himself a Mongolian traveller.

Hardcover octavo of 558 pages, first published in the United Kingdom 1954 by Jonathan Cape. Unclipped jacket with artwork by Rafaelle Busoni, that has some light marking on the rear panel, and minor wear along edges. Original light brown cloth with stamped brown titling and illustration of two riders on dromedaries on the front. Illustrated endpapers of a caravan of riders next to rocky outcrops. Glossary, map of route taken by Big Tiger and Christian, and several line drawings within the text.
