Bijlia is a small genus, placed in the Aizoaceae family, of only two species of clump forming indigenous succulent mesemb plants restricted to a small area of the Little Karoo near the small town of Prince Albert in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. Bijlia (pronounced Bay-lee- ah) is named after Mrs Deborah Susanna van der Bijl, a succulent collector near to Prince Albert.

The common name for these plants is the Prince Albert Vygie. They do very well in pots, rockeries and window succulent gardens. Bijlia are winter growing plants and dormant in summer. Seeds should be sown in autumn.

Bijlia tugwelliae is a perennial mat forming succulent. It has longer leaves than Bijlia dilatata and is less compact.

The leaves are pale green to yellowish white in colour. Flowering time is in autumn (April to May in the southern hemisphere). Flowers are bright yellow and borne very close to the leaves.

Bijlia tugwelliae naturally grows in the shade of deciduous shrubs, offering them deep shade in the hot summer months and light shade in the winter when they are growing. Bijlia tugwelliae is winter growing and summer dormant and should be kept dry and cool during the summer months.

Water well when new leaves start to form at the end of dormancy. It prefers light shade to full sun.
