Biofuel is, as the saying goes, “the talk of the town”. Media reports of big corporates investing millions are heard almost on a daily base. Nevertheless as a result of research done, it was quickly realized that with the minimum capital layout, in contrast to the millions invested by large companies and heard of in the media, almost any person can become a producer of quality biodiesel, either for own use or for retail purposes. The capital outlay when writing this varied between a few hundred rand for a basic and more or less sixty thousand rand in total for the whole operation. In this view it was realized that the production of biodiesel from vegetable oil may be an alternative or a useful complementary product for production by small, medium or for that matter large enterprises. It is also viable for the vehicle owner, manufacturing biodiesel for own use. Furthermore, it is envisaged that the price for such a product will be closely linked to the price of petroleum diesel and as such the producer of biodiesel may very well get a fair price for his/her product.
This guide was researched and written with the aim of supplying the information needed for the production of quality biodiesel i.e. biodiesel suitable for retail purposes in line with national as well as international standards pertaining to the manufacturing of biodiesel.
