In compiling the biographical register of Swaziland, Huw M. Jones has provided an important standard reference work. Biographical information, indispensable to researchers, is for the first time made readily accessible to those interested in the history of south-eastern Africa. The register casts a much wider net than a biographical dictionary as persons were not entered on the criterion of historical significance. Over 1500 entries cover a broad spectrum of individuals, black and white, male and female, who lived in or had some connection with Swaziland between the settlement of the first Dlamini ruler in the mid-eighteenth century and 1902, when the first period of Swazi independence ended. A correspondingly wide range of interests is catered for. The biographical information consolidated in this volume was gathered over a period of 30 years, from an impressive list of sources. These include government records, contemporary and modern published works, newspapers, journals and magazines, and unpublished private papers. Contributing significantly to the historiography of southern Africa, this work will be an invaluable addition to a collection on the region or to any general reference collection.
