The Bird's Nest Fern 'Osaka' has thick, apple-green fronds with ruffled edges that form a bold, leafy rosette. A low-maintenance statement fern that loves humidity and brings a fresh, sculptural feel to your space.
Commonly known as : Birds Nest Fern Osaka
Botanical Name: Asplenium nidus Osaka
With its crinkled, glossy leaves and sculptural shape, the Bird's Nest Fern 'Osaka' is one of the most rewarding ferns to grow indoors. Its thick, vibrant green fronds rise in a symmetrical, nest-like rosette that adds soft drama to any shelf or tabletop. The ruffled edges give it a slightly wild, textured look without ever appearing untidy.
What sets the 'Osaka' variety apart is its thick, leathery leaves that hold up better indoors than many other ferns. It's not a high-maintenance diva it just wants a bit of warmth, steady moisture, and a nice humid corner to stretch out. This makes it a brilliant choice for bathrooms or kitchens where the air isn't too dry.
Light:
Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the fronds. It will tolerate lower light but may grow more slowly. A spot near an east- or south-facing window (but not directly in front of it) is ideal.
💧 Water:
Keep the soil lightly moist, but never soggy. Water when the top 23cm feels dry. Always water around the outer edge of the plant avoid pouring directly into the central rosette as it can cause rot.
🌱 Soil:
Needs a rich, moisture-retentive mix that drains well. Use our Aroid Mix, or combine Barks Unlimited Potting Soil with Perlite for better aeration.
🌡 Temperature:
Happy in typical room temperatures (1826°C). Keep away from cold draughts and heaters. It's not frost-tolerant, so bring it indoors during winter.
🌸 Fertiliser:
Feed monthly in spring and summer with a mild organic fertiliser, diluted to half strength. Hold off during winter.
💦 Humidity:
Loves humidity. Mist the fronds regularly or group with other plants. You can also place it on a shallow tray filled with water and pebbles to raise humidity naturally.
