The patriarch, Georges Bey Batrakani, builds his wealth by manufacturing the tarboosh (fez), a symbol of Egyptian elite society. However, when Egypt undergoes political upheaval in 1952, the tarboosh falls out of favor, forcing the family into exile.

The novel explores themes of identity, displacement, and cultural transformation, reflecting the experiences of many families caught in historical shifts. Solé, who was born in Cairo and later moved to France, brings a deep understanding of Egyptian history and society to his storytelling.
