SELB-PLOSSBERG BAVARIA GERMANY
In the 1930s and 1940s, stamps often appeared with the addition of Germany or Selb to comply with export regulations. However the words Selb and Bavaria Germany continued to be used in the Rosenthal stamp into the 1950s and 1960s..

PHILIPP ROSENTHALE PORCELAIN (1884-present):
Philipp Rosenthal ((6 March 1855 30 March 1937) started doing business in the porcelain industry in 1884 in castle Erkersreuth situated near Bavarian town Selb. In the beginning he was buying Hutschenreuther whiteware. These items were then decorated by his wife Maria and sold door to door.
In 1891 the company becomes Rosenthal & Co., and begins to use a new trademark with a crown and crossed rods. In 1919 the company's name is shortened to "Rosenthal AG".
Until mid 1930s. Rosenthal overtook factories: Kronach (1897), Marktredwitz (with Thomas brand in 1908), Ziedler (1917), Selb (1939), Waldenburg (1936), Sophienthal (1936) and Waldershof (1936).
Philipp Rosenthal was a Jew. In the second half of 1934 situation in Germany was so tense that he lost control of his business. In 1935 he was forced to leave Germany and died in 1937.
The factory continued operations during the WWII under Nazi control but with intervention by Joseph Goebels amazingly continued to operate under the Jewish brand name Rosenthal. Philip Rosenthal, son of the founder, was fighting Nazi Germany. After the win he returned to Germany trying to regain control. He suceeded only in 1950.
Under Rosenthal Philip Junior ((23 October 1916 27 September 2001) management the company swiftly recovered.
Rosenthal started producing glassware in 1967 when it built the "Glassmaker's Cathedral" factory for its Thomas-Glassworks in Amberg, Germany.
Philip hired the best artists such as Bjorn Wiinblad from Denmark, Hans Theo Baumann from Germany, Raymond Peynet from France and Tapio Wirkkala from Finland. In 1979 when the company was closing to the 100th anniversary, it had around 8500 workers.
In 1997 Waterford Wedgwood plc took control of Rosenthal. Part of the group became Hutschenreuther in 2000. Philip Rosenthal died in 2001 at age 84.
Financial problems of Waterford Wedgwood made that in 2009 Rosenthal was bought by Italian Sambonet. The company is now traded as Rosenthal GmbH and makes some of the finest porcelain and glassware in Germany.
