Belamcanda is an East Indian name for this genus of iris-like plants that are native to China, Japan, and Korea
An erect, rhizomatous perennial which typically grows 50-75cm tall. Lily-like, deep orange flowers (to 50mm across), heavily spotted with red dots, have 6 petal-like segments. Flowers appear in early to-mid summer in sprays above the foliage on wiry, naked stems typically rising to 75cm (less frequently to 1m) tall. Sword-shaped, iris-like, medium green leaves (to 25cm long) are in flattened fans. Flowers give way to pear-shaped seed pods which split open when ripe in late summer, with each pod revealing a blackberry-like seed cluster, hence the common name of blackberry lily. Spotting on the flowers gives rise to the additional common name of leopard lily.
Growing blackberry lily: Belamcandas prefer well-drained and fertile soil in full sun. They resent heavy clay soils where the roots have a tendency to rot. Ease of care: Easy. A large grouping of these plants looks especially attractive when backed by a stone or planted among mounds of two ornamental grasses.
