This is the STORM 2 version of the Blackberry and is a GSM/CDMA compatible phone that works on most global networks as well as on WiFi and has Bluetooth capability
This version is a major upgrade from the STORM 1 (9500/9530) which does not have WiFi capability. This phone (STORM 2) will link to your WiFi hotspot at work and home and transfer info via the Wifi network when it is available. At other times it will transfer data via the Cell phone network.
It has Cell C/Vodacom/MTN compatibility and also has Bluetooth so it can be used with the Playbook. It has been in continuous use in Johannesburg over the past 6 months and has recently been upgraded to version 5 software to be compatible with the latest Playbook software release. The WiFi features allow it to offer Blackberry Services via the Wifi network when available offering large speed advantages but all the features of Blackberry phones.
It is in excellent condition and has been used in a Otterbox case protector for most of the six months and has barely a scratch on
the case or the touch screen.
We have operated all our Blackberries on prepaid at R59 per month from Cell C, MTN or Vodacom for the Blackberry Internet Service (BIS) which includes BBM. We also have fitted Whatsapp which gives similar BBM type messages to other users who do not have a Blackberry.
This is a touch screen phone and has three keyboard layouts to choose between, depending on the size of your fingers and how annoyed you are about spelling mistakes in messages. As we are older persons we hate the tiny keys on other cell phones and find the full touch screen of the STORM ideal, making it one of the best phones around when the eyesight starts failing.
The phone also has GPS for maps as well as a camera. We have used it with a GPS Tracker application that plots the phone on a screen at home within meters, allowing us to monitor where the user is such as when they go to late night meetings and we might need to know that they are safe.
The package we are offering comprises a STORM 9550 with battery, a charger, and a USB cable.
The Blackberry family allow you to install software on your PC, to link your phone to the PC, and in this manner update it to the latest software release, back up data, and download and run hundreds of different apps making sure your phone is always current and compatible. It brings in a whole new world of smartphone versatility.
There is a 350 page handbook available for download on the Blackberry site to assist with any queries.
At the Blackberry site you can download software for your PC to backup all your data, update all your applications to the latest versions, and upload different applications from the application library, many of which are free. If you have not yet entered the Blackberry smartphone world, this phone will lead you into a new experience.
We have recently bought a Playbook to link to this phone and this opens a completely new world in smart phones. The phone is linked to the Playbook via Bluetooth and software called Blackberry Bridge. This allows you to access the email, BBM, Contacts, Address Book and Memos on the 7 inch Playbook screen with the large keyboard without having to work at all on the smartphone screen, meaning the STORM 2 can stay in your pocket. The Storm handles all the communication and you still pay only the R59 per month, but you have a large screen and keyboard especially useful for us older persons.
To get optimum use out of a Storm 2, you want a WiFi connection at your home or office as it will automatically route browsing data etc via the Wifi if it is available.
Note
The different cell phone companies are licensed to supply "service books" for different types of Blackberry on prepaid service. We have recently found that Vodacom battle with the CDMA version of the phone and we have switched back to MTN who have all the "service books" needed for the Storm 2 9550.
