Clerodendrum Thomsoniae, also known as Bleeding Glory Bower or Bleeding Heart Vine, is a species of flowering plant in the genus Clerodendrum, native to west Africa. It is an evergreen liana growing up to 1m in containers with shiny green foilage, but can reach 4m tall when given a permanent spot in the ground in tropical zones. The vines spread from 1-1.5m. The flowers are pale white to pale purple five-lobed calyx 2.5cm in diameter and a red five-lobed corolla 2m long in diameter. It is not related to Pacific Bleeding Heart vine.
It is grown as an ornamental plant for its decorative two-colour flowers. With a minimum temperature of 10-13°C, in temperate areas it requires shelter and a frost-free environment. The vines are a rich source of nectar and will attract butterflies if outdoors.
Bleeding Glory Bower performs best in partial shade or dappled sunlight, but it may tolerate full sunlight with plenty of moisture. The plant prefers rich, fertile, well-drained soil. Water the plant frequently during dry weather, the plant requires constantly moist, but not soggy soil. They need frequent fertilization to supply the nutrients required to produce blooms. Feed the plant a slow-release fertilizer every two months during the blooming season or use a water-soluble fertilizer every month.
