In August 2012 the retired paediatric oncologist Professor Cyril Karabus, stopping over in Dubai on his way back to Cape Town, was dramatically arrested at the airport for murder and taken off to jail.
Unbeknown to him, he had been tried ten years earlier and found guilty in absentia of the death of a young leukaemia patient in the United Arab Emirates, where he had been serving as a locum. Deemed a fugitive from justice and liable to pay blood money to the child's parents, Professor Karabus now faced almost insurmountable odds in his quest to prove his innocence.
This is the engrossing story of his struggle and of the extraordinary campaign involving an array of supporters from all over the world to secure his release. Here for the first time are the stories from the mouths of the role-players involved in the delicate negotiations, often behind the scenes, to put pressure on the government and use their connections with the royal family of Abu Dhabi to free the 77-year-old professor.
