THIS PARTICULAR STONE WAS BOUGHT IN 2011 FROM A SELLER IN SOUTH AFRICA. IT WAS NOT INDICATED IF IT IS NATURAL OR LAB GROWN BUT SINCE NATURAL RUBIES THIS SIZE ARE ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND ON THE MARKET ALL INDICATIONS ARE THIS IS A SYNTHETIC OR LAB MADE RUBY BUT IT IS A REAL GEMSTONE WHICH SHARES VIRTUALLY ALL CHEMICAL, OPTICAL, AND PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF ITS NATURAL MINERAL COUNTERPART.
 
IT IS INDEED A REAL RUBY GEMSTONE (EVEN THOUGH SYNTHETIC OR LAB GROWN) AS IT PASSED ALL THE TESTS I COULD PERFORM:
PASSED THE SCRATCH TEST: IT SCRATCHES GLASS EASILY IT IS HARDER THAN GLASS. THIS INDICATES THIS GEMSTONE IS NOT GLASS BUT A REAL MINERAL GEMSTONE. (MOHS HARDNESS GLASS 5.5-6.5 RUBIES 9.0)
PASSED THE RUB TEST: OUR RUBY DID NOT LEAVE ANY COLOR STREAKS WHEN IT SCRATCHED GLASS.

PASSED THE ELECTRON UV LIGHT EMISSION TEST: GIVES A STRONG RED FLUORESCENCE UNDER UV LIGHT. NATURAL RUBIES USUALLY SHOW WEAK RED FLUORESCENCE. A SYNTHETIC RUBY USUALLY SHOWS A STRONG RED FLUORESCENCE. OUR RUBY SHOWS A STRONG RED FLUORESCENCE (PLEASE SEE PHOTO) THAT WOULD INDICATE IT IS AN SYNTHETIC RUBY!
(THE UV LIGHT HIT THE ELECTRONS. THEY JUMP AND FALL BACK. THEY RADIATE LIGHT OF A CERTAIN WAVELENGTH WHEN THEY DO WHICH IS SPECIFIC TO EACH ELEMENT IN THE MINERAL. THIS IS CALLED FLUORESCENCE. ONLY 10% OF GEMSTONES EXHIBIT A FLUORESCENCE AFFECT LIKE RUBIES, SAPPHIRE, TOPAZ, OPALS AND DIAMONDS. GLASS AND ALL NATURAL QUARTZ VARIETIES DOES NOT SHOW A UV AFFECT.)
PASSED THE THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY TEST: TESTED THE THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY WITH A MIZAR PRESTIGE SERIES 2 DIAMOND TESTER. IT MOVED UP THE LADDER FROM STANDARD LEVEL 3 TO LEVEL 6. FOR SAPPHIRES AND RUBIES A LEVEL OF 6 TO 7 IS THE NORM FOR THIS TESTER. THIS TEST INDICATES OUR GEMSTONE IS MOST PROPABLY MADE OUT OF THE MINERAL CORUNDRUM WOULD QUALIFY IT AS A RUBY.

RUBIES: Firstly Rubies is one of the four precious gemstones amongst Saphire, Diamond and Emerald. Real rubies rank 9 on the Mohs scale of Hardness.
Ruby is a red type of the corundum mineral, along with sapphire. Sapphires have each color of the corundum, except red, which is the color of the ruby. Corundum is relatively common in nature, and is completely colourless. Chromium causes the red colour in rubies.
Corundum once found wide application as an industrial abrasive like sandpaper. Gem corundum is mined almost exclusively from gem gravel deposits. Historically, production has been from Myanmar (Burma), Thailand, India and Sri Lanka (Ceylon). Rubies are known as the King of Gemstones and Myanmar and Thailand honor the corundum ruby as their national stone. More recent important sources include East African countries of Madagascar, Tanzania and Mozambique.
The color and clarity of rubies and sapphires is commonly enhanced by heat treatment. This is today the rule rather than the exception. 
 
SYNTHETIC GEMSTONES: A synthetic gem material is one that is made in a laboratory, but which shares virtually all chemical, optical, and physical characteristics of its natural mineral counterpart.
In the late 1800s, ruby became the first gem to be created in a laboratory by Auguste Verneuil. In 1902, he announced the development of his flame-fusion process for synthesizing this beautiful gem. Synthetic rubies and sapphires are presently manufactured in enormous quantities for both industrial and gem application. Synthetic corundum, which includes ruby and sapphire, can be made by the greatest number of processes. Because of this, synthetic corundum is available at many price levels, from very affordable to very expensive. 
Synthetic Gemstones are still real gemstones and since often free of inclusions can appear more beautiful than natural gemstones. On the market it sells for approximately a 30% discount to the natural gemstones which makes them still very exspensive.
