Bloodborne is one of the defining games of the PS4 generation and arguably FromSoftware's most distinctive title. Set in the decaying gothic city of Yharnam, it combines brutal action RPG combat with cosmic horror, disturbing creatures and an intentionally mysterious narrative. ()
Rather than simply building upon the formula established by Demon's Souls and Dark Souls, Bloodborne radically changes the approach to combat. Shields are largely abandoned in favour of aggressive movement, firearms and transforming weapons. The result is an experience that can be brutally difficult but incredibly rewarding.
Combat is the heart of Bloodborne and remains one of its greatest achievements.
Instead of encouraging players to hide behind a shield and patiently wait for openings, Bloodborne rewards aggression. Dodging, positioning, parrying with firearms and immediately attacking after taking damage are fundamental to survival.
The Regain system is particularly effective. When you take damage, a portion of your lost health can be recovered by quickly attacking the enemy. This encourages players to fight back instead of automatically retreating. ()
The transforming weapons are another brilliant idea. Weapons such as the Saw Cleaver and Hunter Axe can switch forms during combat, giving them different ranges, speeds and attack patterns.
Outstanding fast-paced combat.
Excellent weapon design.
Transforming weapons provide tremendous variety.
Firearms create a satisfying parry system.
Regain mechanic rewards aggressive play.
Enemies are dangerous but generally learnable.
Excellent boss encounters.
Character builds allow different playstyles.
Extremely high difficulty can discourage newcomers.
Some weapon types are considerably more useful than others.
Blood vial farming can become tedious.
Certain enemies and bosses can feel unfair.
Limited defensive options mean mistakes are heavily punished.
The combat is demanding, but rarely feels like simple difficulty for its own sake. Learning enemy behaviour and improving your own reactions is central to the experience.
Yharnam is one of the most memorable environments in any action RPG.
The city is enormous, oppressive and interconnected, with narrow streets, towering cathedrals, underground passages, hidden areas and terrifying shortcuts.
The level design is particularly impressive because seemingly separate locations often connect in unexpected ways. Unlocking a shortcut back to a previously visited area can feel like discovering a secret passage in a real city.
Exploration is also deliberately dangerous. Enemies can be hiding around corners, waiting in dark rooms or positioned specifically to punish careless players.
Later areas move beyond Yharnam and introduce increasingly bizarre environments, gradually changing the game's atmosphere from gothic horror into something much more disturbing and cosmic.
There is very little hand-holding. The game expects players to explore, experiment and pay attention.
The story initially appears relatively straightforward.
You arrive in Yharnam seeking a mysterious blood treatment, only to discover that the city has been devastated by a plague that transforms humans into beasts.
From there, the story gradually becomes much stranger.
Bloodborne deliberately hides much of its narrative. Important information is communicated through environmental details, item descriptions, NPC conversations and cryptic dialogue rather than conventional exposition.
The game's themes involve:
Disease and corruption.
Humanity's obsession with knowledge.
The dangers of forbidden experimentation.
Religion and fanaticism.
Madness.
Transformation.
Dreams and nightmares.
Humanity's relationship with incomprehensible cosmic beings.
The transition from gothic monster hunting to cosmic horror is particularly effective.
The downside is that players expecting a straightforward narrative may find the story confusing or inaccessible. Understanding everything requires considerable interpretation.
Boss encounters are among the highlights of Bloodborne.
The game features bosses with distinctive designs, attack patterns and mechanics. Some are enormous beasts, while others are more humanoid opponents requiring precise timing.
Many bosses also force players to adapt their approach. Dodging, parrying, exploiting weaknesses and understanding attack patterns are essential.
Some encounters are arguably less balanced than others, but the best fights provide an extraordinary sense of accomplishment.
Few games make defeating a difficult boss feel quite as rewarding.
Bloodborne is an extraordinary action RPG and one of the strongest games of the PS4 generation. FromSoftware took the foundations of its earlier Souls games and created something much more aggressive, faster and more atmospheric.
The combat is the game's defining achievement. Every weapon has personality, every enemy demands attention and every victory feels earned. The interconnected world design is equally impressive, while the gradual transformation from gothic horror into cosmic nightmare gives the game a remarkable sense of discovery.
Its difficulty will inevitably turn some players away, and the deliberately cryptic storytelling isn't for everyone. Some technical limitations and frustrating encounters also remain.
But these shortcomings don't diminish the overall achievement. Bloodborne has an atmosphere, combat system and artistic identity that few games have managed to replicate.
It isn't simply a great Soulslikeit is one of the most distinctive action RPGs ever made.
