Pretoria - Thirty years ago, on Saturday, August 27, 1977 to be precise, the new Loftus Versfeld was inaugurated when the Springboks played against the World XV.A Springbok team containing six Blue Bulls among others Louis Moolman, Daan du Plessis, Moaner van Heerden, Nic Bezuidenhout and Christo Wagenaar romped to a 45-24 victory over a World selection that included JPR Williams, Willie-John McBride, Andy Haden, Jean-Pierre Rives and Gareth Edwards.

Robert Denton who was appointed in 1971 as Loftus' first full-time manager said initially they wanted to move the stadium to Groenkloof but after the plans had already been drawn up, the decided to rebuild Loftus.

"Loftus was the world's first modern rugby stadium.

"It cost us R4.3m and we could host 66 000 supporters. Later on in the 1980s we started to rebuild the East, North and South pavilion."
