BLUE WILLOW SALT & PEPPER SET

DESCRIPTION:

An off-white glazed china salt and pepper set, decorated with a traditional cobalt blue and
white transfer-printed Old Willow design. It tells the story of a rich man's daughter who
falls in love with her father's assistant. The father disapproves of the relationship and bans
the assistant from the house, forcing them to elope. When they are found, the assistant is
killed. The daughter sets fire to the house, dying in the flames. They reunite in death as
two birds, seen at the top of the design. The eponymous willow symbolises sadness.

No maker's marks.

CONDITION:

No cracks or crazing, with minor glazing imperfections and a fleabite nick to hole of one shaker.

DIMENSIONS:

Each shaker approximately 7cm diameter X 9cm height.
