Boer War 1902 Bermuda POW Hand Carved Box.
A rare Boer War prisoner-of-war hand-carved cedarwood box. The lid is skillfully carved with a scene depicting a hound stalking a pair of pheasants. This would most likely have been a scene witnessed on one of the islands. Also hand-carved into the lid is "BERMUDA 1902". The box is naively made from scraps of cedarwood and wire to fashion the hinges and clasp. The condition is extraordinary with great patina, no damage and all parts fully intact. The box opens and closes smoothly. Please see images above for more detail.
During the Boer War, approximately 5,000 Boer prisoners-of-war were sent to Bermuda and held on five small islands, with those who were considered "irreconcilable" being held on Darrell's Island. The Bermudas were thickly wooded with cedar trees and the prisoners were accommodated in tents. Each camp had an Industrial Association that encouraged participation in camp work and the making of craft items. The Boers carved toys and implements, usually out of cedar, to amuse themselves and make pocket money.
Size : 11.3 (L) x 5.7 (W) x 4.6 (H) cm.
