A Medal to Commemorate the Visit of Joseph Chamberlain to South Africa in 1903.  As British Colonial Secretary he, more than any other man, was responsible for committing Britain to the war and for the final peace agreement.  His visit was political, designed to foster South African unity.  The medallist was Joseph Fray.  Reference Hern No. 572.

The obverse has the full face bust of Chamberlain with monocle and orchid.  The reverse design of 'Peace' with outstreched arm is a splendid example of Art Nouveaux.  In the background is HMS Good Hope on which Chamberlain arrived. The inscription reads: "I GO TO S. AFRICA WITH THE MOST EARNEST DESIRE TO BRING TOGETHER THE PEOPLE INTO ONE GREAT AFRICAN NATION UNDER THE BRITISH FLAG".

Cast. Silver plated bronze.  Diameter 51.0 mm;  mass 53.3 gm.  In excellent condition.  Slight wear but the nose still looks silver (more wear and you can see the underlying bronze).  These medals are often confused with the solid silver examples.  This one has an edge test mark.  The brown leather presentain case with gold trim is in good condition.
