All the dates 1892-1897 of the 2 1/2 shillings ar present. Mostly they are dated 1896 but two have the scarce date 1893. The condition of th coins varies between Fine and VF.
Overall length 57 cm. Weight 309 gm. No damage.
The belt must have be made for a slender woman or a child. There is a velvet backing for the belt with hook-and-eye clasps. Presumably the belt was intended to be concealed under the wearer’s clothing next to the skin and the velvet was there to present chaffing.
It is known that the belt belonged to Jan (Johnny) van Gogh who came to South Africa from the Netherlands at the end of the Second World War. He ws a memberr of the Pietermaritzburg Numismatic Society and older members recalled seeing the belt on display some 25 years ago. The belt forms part of his deceased estate.
