Boer War
According to his application for his ABO medal he served in the Potchefstroom Kommando (Wyk Gatsrand) from 11/10/1899 to 17/01/1901.
He took part in the following battles: Twee Rivieren, Magersfontein, Abrahamskraal and Hekpoort.
According to his application for the "Lint Voor Wonden" he was wounded by a bullet in his right leg at Makokskraal, Ventersdorp.
He was captured and sent to Bermuda (Burt's Island) as a POW.

World War One
According to the Medal Roll and War Record, he served as a Captain in Vermaas Scouts from 16/10/1914 to 05/12/1914 in German South West Africa.
He then served as a Major in the Calvinia-Kenhardt Kommando from 06/12/1914 to 06/01/1915.
He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order for distinguished service in the field in connection with the GSWA Campaign 1914-15.
He was also Mentioned in Despatches in connection with the campaign.
