"General Sir George White (1835 -1912) was the commanding officer of the British garrison at Ladysmith in Natal. The town was besiege by Boer forces from 2 November 1899 until 28 February 1900. General Sir Redvers Buller VC (1839 -1908) was the British Commander in Chief during the early months war when Boer forces successfully advanced into Natal. The invasion was eventually repelled and the siege Ladysmith relieved on 28 February 1900".
