A Boer War Hand Carved Wooden Snuff Box Belonging to a Lieutenant in the Natal Mounted Rifles. A unique and unusual Boer War original souvenir.
Incorporated into the lid is a Large Bronze Coronation Medal for King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra dated 1902. Into the wooden surround is carved: “BOER – WAR 1899 – 1902”.
Into the outside of the base is carved: “K LOWE – LT. NMR”
Diameter: 7.1cm (rim), 6.5 cm (body), 5.4 cm (inside). Height 2.8 cm. Mass 108 gm. The scale can be judged from a 5 Rand coin in one of the images.
The box is in very good condition with no cracks, chips or warping to the wood. The wood had been turned on a lathe to get the circular shape. The lid fits snugly onto the base. The medal has been severely buffed and much of the detail is missing. Presumably this was done before it was fitted into the wooden bezel which remains tight.
