From the Boer War, a gilded bronze medal of Paul Kruger. Known as the "Full Face" medal because it shows Kruger facing front. Comes suspended from a horizontal pin-back ribbon on which is written: "Buren ...... Oberhausen". Buren is the German word for Boer. I am unable to make out the letters which follow. Oberhausen is a city in the Ruhr Valley area of Germany.
The medal was made by Metallwaren-Fabrik Wilhelm Mayer of Stuttgart, Germany. It was issued for sale in Amsterdam to coincide with Paul Kruger’s visit to that city in December 1900. From the ribbon, the issue appears to have been more widespread. Reference: Hern: Medallions of the ZAR and the Anglo-Boer War, No. 366 (Cat. Val. R1,500).
Gilded bronze. Diameter 28.6 mm. In excellent condition with virtually no wear. The ribbon is intact but frayed.
