This is an authentic piece of South African history: a 1900 Boer War commemorative tin. Personally commissioned by Queen Victoria as a New Years gift for the troops serving in the field, these tins were produced by Cadbury, Fry, and Rowntree. This specific tin would have originally held a half-pound of vanilla chocolatea small luxury sent from the Palace to the front lines.

The lid features the embossed gilded portrait of the Queen, her royal cypher ("VRI"), and the inscription "South Africa 1900" with a facsimile of her handwriting. It is a tangible link to the soldiers who served across the South African veld over 125 years ago.

  • ERA: 1900 (Second Boer War / Anglo-Boer War).
  • HISTORICAL CONTEXT: Queen Victoria paid for these personally from the Privy Purse. They are famous for their rounded corners, designed to fit comfortably in a soldier's uniform pocket or haversack.
  • CONDITION: FAIR ANTIQUE CONDITION. The lid and hinge are intact. It shows age-related wear, patina, and some loss to the original gildinghonest wear that confirms its age and service history.
  • DIMENSIONS: 155mm x 95mm x 20mm.
