A Boer War Tribute Medal from Portsmouth to the Naval Brigades of the Ship HMS Terrible who had Served in Natal and Subsequently in China.  Made by William James Dingley of Birmingham in 1902. References: Hern 792 and Hibbard A21. Further information at: Commemorative Medals of South African Historical Interest.

Enamelled Silver. Unnamed as issued. Diameter 27.6 mm.  Mass 8.6 gm.  Enamel intact but a bit scratched. Makers mark and Hallmarks on the reverse are rubbed.  There are three types of this medal.  This is the third type for those who served on HMS Terrible.

The naval guns from HMS Terrible were converted into field artillery and deployed by the Naval Brigade to assist the Natal Field Force under General Buller in the relief of Ladysmith.  Another Naval Brigade from her sister ship, HMS Powerful, had arrived earlier in Natal and were already in Ladysmith participating in the defence of the town.

After the relief of Ladysmith the HMS Terrible was sent to China to assist in the suppression of the Boxer Rebellion. The ship returned home to Portsmouth in 1902. On September 23rd 1902 the citizens of Portsmouth entertained Captain Scott, the officers, and crew of HMS Terrible at a public banquet in the Connaught Drill Hall. During the proceedings, Miss Dupree (the Mayor's daughter) presented to each of the Terribles, numbering about 700, one of these tribute medals.
