Boesman and Lena ~ Athol Fugard

Medium soft cover
Excellent condition

Boesman and Lena by Athol Fugard is a powerful two-act play set during apartheid in South Africa. It follows a displaced "Coloured" couple, Boesman and Lena, as they wander through the mudflats near the Swartkops River after being forcibly evicted from their home. The play explores themes of racism, survival, and human dignity, highlighting the psychological and emotional toll of systemic oppression.

Lena, desperate for connection, invites an elderly Xhosa man into their makeshift shelter, despite Boesmans hostility. Through their interactions, the play examines memory, identity, and the cyclical nature of abuse, as Lena struggles to reconstruct their past while Boesman remains hardened by their circumstances. Fugard's work is deeply introspective, offering a raw portrayal of resilience and despair in the face of injustice.
