John Brown, born in 1780, did his most influential work as minister of Broughton Place, Edinburgh, from 1829 till his death in 1858. From 1834 , he also served as professor of Exegetical Theology in the Divinity Hall of the Secession Church, and some thousand students passed through his classes. Dr. Brown was more than sixty years of age when he began to issue the eleven expository volumes which have since been of such widespread use. Originally published in 1848 his Expository Discourses of the First Epistle of Peter were first delivered to his own congregation spread over a period of sixteen years.
