The book is a light-hearted story of the adventurous life of a South African woman who has inherited the French and Dutch blood of her father, and the Welsh-Scottish Celtic strain of her mother, thus combining many of the basic qualities of her country.

It is written against the background of two continents, Africa and Europe each vying with the other for her affections, and under the surface runs a more serious vein, for in her active life, sometimes politically orientated, she has known both great happiness and deep sorrow. But the chief value of her story lies in her personal experience, and the perception she shows in dealing with the many perplexities besetting her country, which lies so close to her heart.

Miss Juta is a jack of many trades. Apart from a colourful war record, during which she was awarded the Croix-de-Guerre, she was a horsewoman, big game enthusiast, golf champion, traveller, broadcaster, and the author of the Pace of the Ox, a book of the life of President Paul Kruger.
