Box, by Penelope Todd, is a story about Derik, a teenager growing up in New Zealand in a time of change. The government has begun Endorsement, a campaign to implant a special 'wand' into people in an effort to control chemicals in the body and wipe out disease. Derik doesn't like the idea, so he abstains and is on the run from the government. While on the run, he teams up with Marti, a girl who is smart, pretty and independent, and Disco, a mate from his school who got endorsed but Marti managed to get the wand out. For the next few weeks, they work together trying to get food and staying hidden from the student patrols looking out for abstainers. Just when they think they're on their own, they stumble across a meeting of teenage abstainers from all over Dunedin and now had a new goal: to help all the abstainers.
