The Johannesburg Festival was organised to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the city in 1886. As part of the celebration, those people who had settled or were born in Johannesburg before 31 December 1886 were presented with one of these medals by the Governor-General at a function in the Langham Hotel. Pioneers arriving in 1887, 1888 and 1889 received a medal in the post with an accompanying letter. It is recorded that 520 medals were issued. The medal measures 39 mm in diameter.
