The Brain Cactus is a fascinating and unique succulent that gets its name from its intriguing, brain-like shape. It has a very twisted and crested growth pattern which is really an eye-catching plant!
Commonly known as : Brain Cactus
Botanical name : Mammillaria Elongata 'Cristata'
The Brain Cactus is one of those plants that instantly grabs attention. With its curious, contorted form that resembles a brain or coral, it's a bold and bizarre beauty for any collection. It's actually a crested form of the more common Mammillaria elongata, and its unique growth is the result of a natural mutation that causes the stems to twist and fan out.
Perfect for sunny windowsills, bright desks, or small plant shelves, this cactus offers texture, structure and an unusual charm. It grows slowly, stays compact, and doesn't mind a bit of neglect just how we like our cacti.
Light:
Needs bright light with plenty of direct sun ideally 46 hours a day. A sunny north- or west-facing windowsill is ideal. Without enough light, it may become elongated and lose its unique shape.
💧 Water:
Water very sparingly. Let the soil dry out completely between waterings. In summer, water every 23 weeks; in winter, even less. Avoid overwatering at all costs.
🌱 Soil:
Go for fast-draining soil. You can use our Aroid Mix with added grit, or blend Barks Unlimited Potting Soil with Perlite for better drainage.
🌡 Temperature:
Loves warmth between 1828°C. Protect from frost or cold drafts. Bring indoors if it drops below 5°C.
🌸 Fertiliser:
Feed every 68 weeks in spring and summer with a mild organic fertiliser, diluted to half strength. No feeding needed in winter.
