This is the first run of the 1879 bayonet that was manufactured from old stock of the 1859 pattern. They had the hand guard ground down and the Sawback cut into the spine of the bayonet. All the relevant stampings on the blade showing that this is an original 1859 pattern with the relative stampings for when it was converted to a pattern 1879. The bayonet is in super condition, but the leather scabbard has a tear to the bottom of the reverse of the scabbard, where the bayonet has been stuck trough the scabbard. This Bayonet was to fit the Martini Henry rifle.
