He served with the British South Africa Company Force in Matabeleland in 1893. In South Africa he served from 1899 to 1900 he was present with Cavalry Headquarter Staff during the time, and at the was appointed major, under General Hunter, in charge of Transport of Flying Column (mentioned in dispatches and awarded a medal).

Marshall Hole came to British South Africa Company in 1889 and met the mine magnate and politician Cecil John Rhodes offered him a job as the first clerk to the newly formed BSAC . In 1891. Marshall Hole took up the position of private secretary. (he was shortly to be appointed Administrator of the company's territories). Marshall Hole also known for the Marshall Hole currency.
