This is a relic condition "India Pattern" socket bayonet which would have used with the British Brown Bess flint-lock musket. They were produced between 1795 and 1815 and were heavily used during the Napoleonic Wars.
I originally got this bayonet in Hermanus in the Western Cape and therefore this bayonet could possibly be a relic of the early British occupation of the Cape between 1795 and 1803, and from 1806 onwards.
The remnants of some markings can be identified between the pitting, including 4 lines on the back of the socket, and what appear to be "r 7" on the exterior side wall of the socket.
This bayonet has been restored and either nickel or chrome plated. (This restoration was not of my doing.)
