Buddstone is a beautiful, opaque green metamorphic rock, often with mottled patterns. It's sometimes also referred to as "African Jade" (though it is not true jade). Its rich green coloration comes mainly from the presence of fuchsite mica (a chromium-rich mineral).
Appearance: Smooth, mottled or streaked shades of green, sometimes with darker inclusions.
Composition: A metamorphosed sedimentary rock, often quartzite or chert altered by chromium minerals.
Uses: Popular as a semi-precious stone for carving, cabochons, beads, and ornamental objects. Its toughness makes it ideal for polished decorative items.
Metaphysical associations: Many believe it encourages prosperity, emotional healing, and resilience (often marketed in the metaphysical crystal trade).
Buddstone is found primarily in South Africa and Zimbabwe.
In South Africa, notable deposits occur in the Barberton Greenstone Belt (Mpumalanga) and other metamorphic terrains.
In Zimbabwe, it is also mined and often sold alongside verdite (a similar green stone).
It's relatively unique to Southern Africa, which makes it quite special in the gemstone and collector's market.
