This large GOLD medal was issued to commemorate South Africa’s first gold coin, the Burgerspond in 1874.

The obverse features Thomas Francois Burgers, the State President of the Z.A.R. from 1872 to 1877.

The reverse shows gold prospectors at Pelgrimsrest with the words “BURGERSPOND 1874 The first gold coin ever issued in South Africa”

This large crown-sized medallion weighs 25.5 grams and is 35 mm in diameter. It was struck in 18-carat solid gold.
