Vicia sepium Seeds

Common Name: Bush Vetch

Vicia sepium or Bush Vetch is a plant species of the genus Vicia. It is a vigorous, climber with pale purplish-blue pea flowers which are followed by blackish peapods. The stunning flowers are 12-15 mm long and bluish-purple in color and are borne during spring, summer and autumn. This perennial will grow 15-35 cm in height spreading easily by runners, clambering over obstacles in its path. It has tough pinnate leaves ending in a thin tendril, and clusters of purple flowers which fade to blue or brown, making a patch of them quite colourful and distinctive. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Bees. The plant is self-fertile and can fix Nitrogen in the soil. The cooked seeds are said to be edible. Succeeds in any well-drained soil in a sunny position if the soil is reliably moist throughout the growing season, otherwise it is best grown in semi-shade. This species has a symbiotic relationship with certain soil bacteria, these bacteria form nodules on the roots and fix atmospheric nitrogen. Some of this nitrogen is utilized by the growing plant but some can also be used by other plants growing nearby.
