"This work, which is the first of its kind in South Africa and is, indeed, a book long overdue, is the result of over twenty years of collecting and careful study. The author must have covered tens of thousands of miles during that period on foot, on horseback, by ox-wagon, bicycle, motor-cycle, motor-car and even on occasion by aeroplane, in a sustained effort to trace the various species and to determine as far as possible their habitat and habits. For the first time practically all our South African butterflies will be seen in colour, and throughout the work the reader will be impressed not only by the knowledge the author has gained - and so willingly imparts - with regard to the places where so many of our rarer butterflies are to be found and the time of the year when they may be expected to be on the wing, but also by the admiration, one may say the affection, he displays for so many of his beautiful insect friends.".
