Cabinet Card of a ZAR State Artillerist in Full Dress Uniform
A handsome photograph, of an unidentified member of the 1st, 2nd or 3rd mounted batteries of the Transvaal State Artillery (Staats-Artillerie van de Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek) in full dress uniform (the new uniform) with the Staats-Artillerie busby and sabretache pouch.
Before the outbreak of the Boer War the ZAR maintained a professional artillery corps, and uniforms for these corps were based on those worn by the Dutch Artillery units in the late 19th century.
The cabinet card (16 x 11cm) is in a good condition with fine detail visible, gilt lettering of the photographer (Munro, Pretoria) and gilt edging intact. Inscribed on the verso.
