Calceolaria, also called lady's purse, slipper flower and pocketbook flower or slipperwort, is a genus of plants in the Calceolariaceae family, sometimes classified in Scrophulariaceae by some authors. This genus consists of about 388 species of shrubs, vines and herbs, and the geographical range extends from Patagonia to central Mexico, with its distribution centre in Andean region. Calceolaria species usually have yellow or orange flowers, which can have red or purple spots.

Calceolaria arachnoidea commonly known as Purple Lady's Purse and Purple Pocketbook is native to the Central Zone of Chile, at altitudes that range between 2000 and 3000m above sea level. This herbaceous perennial can reach up to 60cm in height, has beautiful silver-grey basal hairy leaves and blooms during summer. Calceolaria arachnoidea is of fast growth and blooms the first year from seeds. Its main requirements are lots of light, well drained but slightly moist soil, full sun and regular water – do not over water. Sow during autumn, in a mix of two portions compost, one portion regular garden soil, one portion vermiculite and one portion sharp river sand. Cover this mixture with a fine layer of sand, distribute the seeds and gently press them against this growing media. Transplant them into pots when the seedlings have 2 true leaves. Calceolaria arachnoidea is a beautiful addition to a rockery, as ground cover, container plant etc.
