Calceolaria, also called lady's purse, slipper flower and pocketbook flower or slipperwort, is a genus of plants in the Calceolariaceae family, sometimes classified in Scrophulariaceae by some authors. This genus consists of about 388 species of shrubs, vines and herbs, and the geographical range extends from Patagonia to central Mexico, with its distribution centre in Andean region. Calceolaria species usually have yellow or orange flowers, which can have red or purple spots.
This herbaceous perennial form a low ground-hugging rosette of hairy leaves, with wiry stems rising above in late spring, each bearing a pair of inflated golden-yellow pouch flowers marked with tiny red spots. It appreciates an evenly moist but well-drained soil. It does particularly good in a shady rockery. Protect from hot afternoon sun. |
