The Canadian Silver Maple Leaf was first introduced in 1988, less than a decade after the Royal Canadian Mint unveiled its gold counterpart. Coins in the Silver Canadian Maple Leaf series are considered legal tender in Canada, with a face value of $5 (CAD). Over the life of the series, the same images have been used for both the reverse and obverse sides of the coin. The imagery is the same as that used on the Gold Canadian Maple Leaf.
On the reverse side of the 2013 1 oz Silver Canadian Maple Leaf is the image of a single leaf as designed by the RCM Engravers. The image on the 2013 coin is the same as that used when the coin was introduced in 1988. Engravings on this side include “Canada” and “Fine Silver 1 oz Argent Pur.” The coin’s purity is listed on either side of the maple leaf.
The obverse side features a third-iteration portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, as designed in 2004 by Susana Blunt. Her Majesty’s image is surrounded by the engravings of “Elizabeth II,” the face value, and the year of minting for the coin.
The Royal Canadian Mint was established in 1908 by the British to process and refine gold, silver, and other precious metals discovered in the Yukon Territories. Today, the mint is considered one of the finest in the world and has a state-of-the-art facility that helps make it a leader in innovative designs.
