Advanced autofocus

EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III USM features a ring-type USM motor and high-performance CPU, which work to ensure faster focusing.

With the incorporation of two large diameter GMO dual surface aspherical elements and one ground aspherical element, the lens will minimize distortions throughout the zoom range as well as maintain edge-to-edge sharpness and illumination.

Along with those elements, the lens utilizes two Ultra-low Dispersion glass elements that minimize chromatic aberrations. Also, it uses both a Subwavelength Coating and an Air Sphere Coating to minimize flare and ghosting.

Durable L-series construction

The robust, durable, weather-sealed construction of EF 16-35mm f2.8L III USM helps it to withstand the rigors of professional use.

In terms of handling, the Canon EF 16 - 35mm uses a ring-type USM focusing motor combined with a high-speed CPU and optimized algorithms for lightning-fast and accurate autofocus.

The lens has an internal focus design and offers full-time manual focus override so users can make tweaks using the physical focusing ring regardless of mode. Along with all of this, the aperture diaphragm uses nine rounded blades to create a smooth bokeh.

For professional use, the lens is dust- and water-resistant, using seals throughout to prevent intrusion of particles, especially when shooting in inclement weather. Additionally, it uses a fluorine coating on the exposed front and rear elements to reduce smears and make cleaning easier.

The EF 16—35mm f2.8L III USM features a new optical design engineered to deliver images of remarkable clarity and depth — a magnificent complement to the large, high-resolution sensors in the SLRs favoured by today's advanced photographers. It employs two large-diameter double-surface GMo lenses plus a ground aspherical lens to help decrease distortion, a curvature of field and astigmatism.

Two UD lenses help to reduce chromatic aberration, leading to precise colour rendition, accurate edge-to-edge detail plus excellent contrast throughout the lens's zoom range. This means sharp landscapes, reduced distortion in the edges of the frame and an overall improvement in image quality no matter the subject.

Full-time manual focus allows manual focus adjustment while in AF Mode.

The EF 16—35mm f2.8L III USM offers complete manual control, even when AF is engaged, with a simple twist of the lens's focus ring. Additionally, full-time manual focus means it's easy to achieve and maintain focus manually, which can be especially handy when shooting video or composing still images on an SLR's screen.

Subwavelength Coating (SWC) and Air Sphere Coating (ASC) help to significantly reduce flare and ghosting.

The EF 16—35mm f2.8L III USM features both Subwavelength Coatings (SWC) and Air Sphere Coatings (ASC) on its lens elements to help combat reflections, flare and ghosting, and deliver clean images with reduced aberrations from reflected light. Subwavelength Coatings help prevent reflections by arranging an array of wedge-shaped nanostructures on the lens's surface that are smaller than the wavelength of visible light and are able to help control reflection and flare.

Air Sphere Coating technology puts an ultra-low refractive layer on the lens element designed to significantly reduce both flare and ghosting. These coatings, in concert with the EF 16—35mm f2.8L III USM's overall optical formula, help to deliver a clean image to the camera's sensor, which can decrease the need for post-production.

Fluorine coating on front and rear lens surfaces help reduce smears and fingerprints.
