This top quality Canon zoom is ideal for portraiture/fashion, news/events, creativity and general applications and unlike most zooms maintains a fast 2.8 aperture capability throughout the zoom range. It features extra low dispersion elements to reduce aberations, has an ultrasonic motor for faster focussing and an image stabilisation group for sharp pictures at slower shutter speeds than normally possibly. When combined with it's very fast f2.8 aperture, this lens performs extremely well in low-light or indoors.
When used on APS-C size cameras, ie model numbers above 10 (eg 40D) this lens has a 35mm equivalent focal length of 112-320mm.

‘IS’ is for Image Stabiliser
Canon’s optical stabiliser uses micro gyroscopic sensors that detect light camera shake and inform the onboard computer which then actually shifts the IS lens group to compensate for the movement in your hands. With this system you can shoot at much slower shutter speeds and still achieve sharp pictures.
‘USM’ is for Ultrasonic motor
Instead of a motor, ultrasonic vibrations power the lens, making focusing precise, virtually noiseless and incredibly quick – some lenses focusing literally faster than the human eye. The USM starts instantaneously and stops the moment focus is achieved, with no overshooting. What's more, the USM requires minimal battery power so you can shoot for longer on a single charge.
