Shutter: Vertical-travel, focal plane shutter with all speeds electronically controlled. First and second curtain operation controlled by a dedicated release-type electromagnetic control system. Shutter Speed: 1/8800-80 sec. and bulb. X-sync is 1/200 sec. Set in 1/2-step increments.
Manual focusing: possible.
Light Metering: TTL full-aperture metering using 16-zones SPC (silicon photocell). Three metering modes available: Evaluative Metering (corresponds to 5 focusing points), Spot Metering (occupies approx. 3.5% of finder area) and Centre-Weighted Average Metering. Metering system also rotates automatically when shooting vertically.
Film Speed Setting: Automatically set according to DX code (ISO/ASA 25 -5000) OR set by user ASA/ISO 6-6400.

Flash Coverage Angle: Automatically zooms to cover the field of view of 28mm, 50mm and 80mm focal lengths.
Camera Shake Warning: Camera-shake indicator blinks in viewfinder when the shutter speed (Tv auto) falls below 1/focal length minus 0-0.5 f-stop in Full Auto mode or a Programmed Image Control mode.
Red-Eye Reduction Function: Applicable for all shooting modes.
Self-Timer: Electronically controlled with a 10-sec.

The Vertical Holding Grip VG-10 makes it easier to hold and control the EOS 5 in the vertical format. It has its own shutter release button, AE Lock button, main dial and focusing point selection button, all position for convenient operation with the camera held on its side. Can still be used on a tripod with the Vertical Holding Grip fitted.
