This beautiful medallion forms part of the Cape Coin Heritage Set, which comprises of 30 sterling silver replicas of coins which circulated during the early days at the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, from the early 1600s to the early 1800s.
The proof set was issued in 1978 by the Africana Commemorative Mint.
The issue was limited world-wide to 5000 sets.

The Cape of Good Hope was in the old days known as the Tavern of the Seas as it welcomed many seafaring nations from around the world. This was evident in the multitude of foreign coins that was accepted and circulated at the Cape from the time of Van Riebeeck.
