A Five Pounds Bank Note from the Montague Bank in the Cape of Good Hope Colony. There is no date but the Bank functioned between 1861 and 1868. The note is un-signed and un-issued as all known examples are. Reference: Hern, South African Banknotes and Papermoney, page 80.
Printed on thin, watermarked, parchment-like paper with rough edges. 22.5 cm x 11.7 cm. Numbered: "No. 1898". As is seen on other examples of these notes, there are three pressure point marks down the left edge. In uncirculated condition. The paper is wrinkled close to the left edge (old dampness?). No foxing. No pinholes.
A similar note was sold on auction last year by Stack's Bowers for $324.
